When you started writing professionally did you have a mentor or another author that you shared writings with?

I'm not sure what writing professionally specifically means in my case. I started writing at 13 with the intention of making this my career so I did everything I could to make that happen. Since I was so young, I started by connecting with my English teachers who helped me improve and also understand the industry and how it worked. As I got older and went to college, I connected with writers online via blogs. I met a few of my critique partners that way. We would exchange work and give feedback. I also started to attend different local/state writing events where I met more authors, agents, publishers. When they would give me feedback, I'd return home and read more books then approach my book with what I'd learned. Sometimes one thing changes your whole approach. I went to a one-time critique group and one woman at a critique group I joined said to add more emotion to my work. That changed no only how I read, but how I wrote. No one else had ever told me that before.

I hope this helped answer you question...the answer is yes but also...I didn't just have one person the entire time. I will say that now that I have an editor, I do not use critique partners or groups anymore.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I’ve never written until I got out of the Navy and how found so much joy in it. But don’t know anyone that does so too. And then I met you and George was like just ask her! 😂😂
